Industry methane partnership drives nearly 50% reduction in average flare intensity
The Environmental Partnership released its fourth annual report highlighting the industry’s efforts to reduce methane emissions and improve environmental performance across the natural gas and oil industry. The report revealed continued progress across all six environmental performance programs, including reducing flaring, replacing gas-driven pneumatic controllers with low- or zero-emitting devices and reducing leak occurrence rates to 0.05% among the nearly 100,000 sites surveyed.Since launching in 2017, the Partnership has quadrupled in size, now representing 100 companies that make up 70% of the US onshore natural gas and oil industry.Highlights from the report include:• Reducing flaring: In 2021, there was a
Schlumberger launches digital platform for independent software vendors
Schlumberger launched its Digital Platform Partner Program, which will allow independent software vendors (ISVs) to build new applications and software and offer them to the market. The company said in a statement that users will be able to access a broad range of interoperable digital systems, enabling data-driven decision making across the energy value chain.“Our digital platform has become an open ecosystem of connected digital solutions, enabling customers to extract maximum value from their data, helping them innovate faster and drive business performance improvements at scale,” said Trygve Randen, Director, Digital Subsurface Solutions at Schlumberger. At launch, nine ISVs are offering
Schlumberger, Cognite to partner on integration of data analytics, AI systems
Schlumberger and Cognite announced a partnership to integrate Schlumberger’s Enterprise Data Solution for subsurface with Cognite Data Fusion, an open industrial DataOps platform. The partnership will allow users to integrate data from reservoirs, wells, and facilities in a single, open platform, and leverage embedded AI and advanced analytics tools to optimize production, reduce costs and decrease operational footprint.“Operational data in the production domain is a vastly underutilized customer asset due to its complexity and lack of contextualization at scale. Our strategic partnership with Cognite leverages Cognite Data Fusion to extract better and faster insights from our domain-specific applications in flow
US Department of Energy launches initiative aimed at reducing geothermal
The US Department of Energy (DOE) announced a new initiative to cut the cost of enhanced geothermal systems (EGS) by 90% to $45 per megawatt hour by 2035. The “Enhanced Geothermal Shot” is part of US President Joe Biden’s initiative to deliver net-zero emissions across the US economy by 2050.“The United States has a vast, geothermal energy resource lying right beneath our feet, and this program will make it economical to bring that power to American households and businesses,” said US Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm. “DOE’s Enhanced Geothermal Shot will move geothermal technology from research and development to cost-effective commercial
Huisman develops low-emission harsh environment semisubmersible
Huisman, a manufacturer of heave construction equipment, has designed a harsh environment semisubmersible that it says can help drillers and operators realize significant emissions reduction. The rig contains an energy storage system and is designed to run on onshore-produced hydroelectricity, via a power cable from a nearby platform. It can also be powered by floating wind turbines moored nearby. The company said in a statement that these power generation systems could lead to a reduction in emissions as high as 86% per well compared to a conventional harsh environment semisubmersible.“We think it’s important that the exploitation of fossil fuel reserves is
Oil States Industries acquires E-Flow Control Holdings
Oil States Industries (OSI) shared details regarding a previously announced acquisition of Aberdeen-based E-Flow Control Holdings (EFC), a global controls, monitoring, instrumentation and handling company. The transaction expands Oil States’ electrification and digitalization capabilities by adding integrated control packages to the company’s drilling, deepsea minerals systems and renewables product offerings. It also provides EFC access to OSI’s global operational resources to strengthen EFC’s aftermarket support capabilities across every major offshore basin.EFC specializes in high-integrity, fully integrated control and hydraulic power systems with touchscreen user interfaces that allow for digital twin data visualization and control of assets. The company provides turnkey
Well-Safe awards North Sea plug and abandonment contract to Trendsetter
Trendsetter Engineering announced a contract award by Well‐Safe to utilize the Trident Intervention System and technical services for UK North Sea Abandonments. The system will be deployed from Well‐Safe’s Guardian rig to conduct a 320-day multi‐well P&A campaign.“We are excited to work with Well‐Safe to bring TRIDENT to the North Sea for plug and abandonment operations,” said Mike Cargol, Vice President of Rentals & Services for Trendsetter Engineering. “We look forward to providing our value‐added intervention services and are eager to identify additional opportunities for collaboration for our two companies.”“Trendsetter is an ambitious partner with a strong track record of
Automation of tubular running services is set to transform rig floor operations
All aspects of energy exploration and production improve over time as new technology changes the paradigms of how assets are extracted from reservoirs. What was once considered radical and industry leading can become outdated and inefficient with each new invention.Tubular running services (TRS) is no exception. The process began with field personnel manually making up tubulars and running into the wellbore. It was time consuming, incurring significant nonproductive time (NPT), and was sometimes fraught with unintended errors that damaged the tubulars and periodically produced inconsistent connection makeup, resulting in frequent work stoppages to remake connections and lay down rejected joints. In
