Oil States new remote monitoring technology improves wellsite safety during frac operations
At the 2024 SPE Hydraulic Fracturing Technology Conference in The Woodlands, Texas, Oil States International showcased its newly released ACTIVELatch technology, which the company says is the industry’s first battery-operated wireless latch. The tool allows operators to make and break wireline connections to the well wirelessly via OilStates’ ACTIVEHub communication and control system without the need for cables or hydraulics, removing personnel from the redzone for increased wellsite safety. In this video interview with DC taken from the floor of the conference on 7 February, Patrick McKeever, Business Development Manager at Oil States, spoke about the tool and the value
Eavor Technologies Insulated drill pipe designed to protect BHA electronic tools in geothermal applications
In order to drill the deeper and hotter wells often seen in geothermal and high-pressure, high-temperature oil and gas applications, drillers must properly manage temperatures at the bottomhole assembly (BHA). Not only will proper temperature management ensure the survival of downhole electronic tools, it can also help improve drilling performance, said Alex Vetsak, Well Construction Advisor at Eavor Technologies. In this video interview with DC from the IADC Drilling Engineers Committee (DEC) Q4 2023 Tech Forum on 1 November, Mr Vetsak discussed Eavor’s insulated drill pipe, which was designed to minimize heat transfer from the annulus. Mr Vetsak explained how
Expro to deploy single shear and seal solution for deepwater field in Gulf of Mexico
Expro has secured a contract with a major operator for the first deployment of its single shear and seal high-debris 15K ball valve assembly. The multifunctional single shear and seal mechanism will form part of a full subsea deepwater completion/intervention system being designed by Expro for a deepwater subsea field at about 6,600 ft (2,000 m) in the Gulf of Mexico. The mechanism is designed to answer the customer’s requirement for a versatile, single-valve subsea solution rather than the conventional double-valve system, while offering the reassurance of risk reduction through an additional safety barrier. The three-year contract for the in-riser system is valued
Interventek to deliver 20,000-psi open-water well intervention valves
Aberdeen-based Interventek has announced a deal to supply a complete set of fully qualified 20,000-psi open-water well intervention shear and seal valves to Trendsetter Engineering. The agreement allows Trendsetter exclusive global rights to deploy the 20K, 5 1/8-in. open-water valves for the next five years, with the first set to be delivered later this year as part of a mid-seven-figure first order. These ground-breaking 20K Revolution valves are designed as a compact, modular addition for lightweight subsea intervention systems. They will provide the safety-critical well control function within Trendsetter’s new 20K TRIDENT Subsea Intervention System, which is scheduled for the first
Wintershall Dea to use AGR time and cost management software in drilling operations
Wintershall Dea will implement AGR Software’s iQx probabilistic time and cost estimation and tracking applications for its drilling and well projects in Norway. The development will play a role in enabling greater standardization for Wintershall Dea’s well and drilling teams in the well delivery process. The move will also improve communication and automation in workload distribution and increase the transparency of project-related risks and costs for the management team and wider stakeholders.iQx P1 drilling time and cost planning application uses Monte Carlo simulation methods and enhances understanding of correlation between well costs and risks. The tool will contribute to decision making
Nabors retrofits robotics module onto existing land rig to achieve full automation
Nabors has launched its Canrig Red Zone Robotics (RZR) Rig Floor Module, a modular rig upgrade that automates routine drilling activities. Nabors retrofitted an existing rig – X29 – with the RZR module and has drilled multiple horizontal wells for ExxonMobil in the Permian Basin. The companies had previously collaborated on Nabors’ fully automated R801 newbuild rig last year.RZR is electric powered, allowing precision control and digital workflows. It enables completely hands-free pipe handling and eliminates the need for a crew member to be positioned on the floor and in the derrick. The system autonomously performs repetitive tasks on the
