Weatherford’s 5.5-15 hydraulic tubing and casing tong provides 15,000 ft-lb (20,340 Nm) of torque capability for makeup and breakout of 1.66- to 5.5-in. tubing and casing. The ergonomic and lightweight design of the tong enables safe and efficient makeup of premium connections on both standard and corrosion-resistant alloy (CRA) tubulars. The patented free-floating hydraulic backup virtually eliminates bending and shearing when making up or breaking out connections. Features such as the integrated thread-compensation system, the optional patented Micro-Grip® system, and the free-floating hydraulic backup help to ensure proper connection makeup and long-term wellbore integrity. Operation can be fully or semi mechanized, and the tong is fully compatible with Weatherford’s tong-positioning systems, which shall include but not limited to PowerFrame, PowerScope system.

Weatherford´s patented* MicroGrip™ system is used in hydraulic power tong jaws to minimize die marks on corrosion-resistant alloy (CRA) tubulars. Conventional power tong jaws are equipped with jaws and dies that penetrate the surface of the pipe when the tong jaws are engaged. These penetration points are potential sites for the initiation of stress corrosion cracking and sulfide stress cracking can compromise the integrity of the tubular string. The MicroGrip™ system inserts use serrated vertical gripping bars embedded in an elastomer. The force needed to transfer the rotational torque is equally distributed over a large of number of small gripping elements, hence the indentation of each single gripping element into the pipe surface. Extensive testing proves that use of the Micro-Grip system prevents corrosion in high CO2 and H2S concentration well environments.
